MNAC, short for The National art museum of Catalonia, Standing at a perfect position on Montjuic hill, Barcelona, Spain, prides itself on a wealth of historic and modern art objects.

The name “National art museum of Catalonia” or as the Spanish say “Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluna” was just recently given to it. MNAC is the result of merging Catalonian Law Museum, Catalonian Art Museum and Modern Art Museum in 1990.

MNAC enjoys a rich collection of Romanesque art from 11th to 13th centuries which are mostly taken from chapels and churches within and around Catalonia area. These are wall-paintings which were carried to the museum very carefully.

There are also a unique collection of Renaissance and Baroque items gifted by Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Paintings like Three Beggars – Il Pitocchetto – by Giacomo Ceruti and famous Sailing Boats on the Shore beside a Village by Salomon Jacobsz are examples of items in this section.

There is also a section dedicated to modern Catalan art mostly from the 19th century including “he Portrait of Painter’s Wife and Children” by Claudi Lorenzale using oil on canvas and Ruins by Lluيs Rigalt.

Photography has also a share in MNAC including 6500 pictures from the 19th and 20th centuries. Pictures like Riot Police taken by Agustي Centelles on 19 July 1936 and The Columbus Monument by Francesc Català-Roca are good examples of photos there.

One of the most interesting sections is The Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia comprising 130000 pieces of medals and coins. The very rare piece of Drachma from Emporion belonging to third century BC and Pirral from Mesina belonging to Petter II period are displayed in this section. Another piece that cannot be overlooked is a 10 reales coin from Barcelona, Louis XIV period.

Gothic art has been allocated a large section of MNAC. Gothic art was very popular in 12th century. A gothic artist would try to include as much story as they could onto a single painting, sculpture or fresco. “Life and Legend of Saint Nicholas” is a sample of it. This fresco as the name makes clear, demonstrates a full account of St. Nicholas’ life. One piece of tempera on wood in this section that took the writer’s eyes was altarpiece of the Virgin transferred from the monastery of Santa Marيa in Sigena in 1918. Each one of these masterpieces and hundreds of others alone is enough to convey the whole idea behind Gothic art.

Perhaps the most interesting fact about MNAC is that it dose not just attract art-lovers. In order to reach the museums one has to take around 100 steps on Montjuic hill at which point the view of Barcelona is breathtaking. There is also the majestic “Magic Fountain” which is very popular among tourists and although performing only 15 minutes each turn, hundreds of tourists gather around it to appreciate the work of Carles Buigas, the designer of the fountain. The Barcelona Olympic Stadium, the venue for the 1992 Olympic games, and a very beautiful park is located at the back of the museum that are really worth a visit.

There was a story I learned as a child titled Chicken Little, in which the main character, Chicken Little, needed attention and so he went about creating alarm by providing misinformation about atmospheric conditions—attempting to convince everyone that “the sky was falling.” Since he was one of the few chickens that took it upon himself to forecast, the other chickens in the pen quickly accredited him as an expert and became quite convinced that the Blue Sky Armageddon was upon them. Naturally, the truth eventually became known and Chicken Little became remorseful and repented.

The children’s story resonates in today’s investment world with the analogous warning issued about the practice of holding real estate assets in a self-directed IRA (also referred to as a real estate IRA or IRA real estate by investors). The warning is this: “Don’t invest in real estate because at age 70 ½ you’ll be faced with minimum required distribution and you’ll have an illiquid asset to contend with.” Although it is in fact true that you may end up with an illiquid asset, this statement fails to take into consideration the bigger picture. Let’s take a more realistic view and consider a few important points: 1) No one should have just one asset in his or her IRA to rely upon solely for retirement—consider telecommunication and Enron stocks, the demise of many an IRA; 2) The real estate asset should have been producing a return on investment, for example, rent; 3) A forward thinking person would consider that at 68 the asset should be placed on the market for sale. 4) If a custodian won’t allow such investments stating that they are against IRS regulations, it means only that it is against their policy. LSay you went into a coma at age 68 and awoke at age 70, told your custodian that you would pay the equivalent tax for the minimum required distribution and took personal ownership of the equivalent value of the asset. Let’s break this scenario down (you can plug your own numbers at http://www.kiplinger.com/personalfinance/php/ira/question.htm):

At age 70 ½, a lot you originally bought for $10,000 is worth $20,000 and it is the only asset in your IRA. The whopping MRD (minimum required distribution) would be $754.52, assuming a 20% tax bracket. Assuming the value of the asset did not increase the portion of the asset allocated to you would 1/26 of the asset. After paying the IRS $150 you would personally own that portion of the asset. Year after year, the process would continue. Alternatively, you could take the entire distribution, paying $4,000 to the IRS, and would then own the entire asset.

Although some still might argue that you would be in a higher tax bracket, keep in mind they are probably the same people that told you that you would be in the lower tax bracket when it was assumed that you had few other assets to rely upon.

There will always be nay-sayers about any investment choice, but a clear understanding of the self-directed investment process and strategy eliminates the fear of risk that can lead to doubt among the uneducated. Educating yourself also allows you to navigate through the influence and directives of organizations who may operate based on their own clearly defined agendas rather than what is in your best interest.

Many investors have become disillusioned with the traditional investments available to them through traditional channels. More and more investors are looking for ways to invest their retirement dollars for a larger more consistent and safer return. The problem is knowledge and investment tools. The investor armed with a self-directed IRA and investment knowledge will certainly earn far more in his portfolio. Oil and gas certainly has very good potential for the IRA holder beyond stocks in the large oil companies burdened with huge overhead constraints.

When conducting your due diligence on a company that drills for oil and gas to determine if it is a good investment, it is just as important to research the current market trends. Investigating into the investment of oil and gas provides a very clear picture of supply and demand. The effects on these resources are far reaching from the gas pump to the milk container.

Currently, Americans consume more oil and gas than the U.S. has in natural resources. As a result, this places a high demand on foreign sources of oil and gas subsequently, the price of oil and gas are driven higher. In recent history, oil prices were at $28 per barrel compare that with today’s oil price of $58 per barrel, the return on investment (ROI) for an investor is potentially incredible. Other global, environmental and political pressures have influenced prices. These influences are as follows:

• China and India, the most populated countries in the world, have become increasing their demand for oil because of each the country’s increased growth in population and economies. • The U.S. is currently at full capacity for refining process (refining is the processing of crude oil into a usable form) of crude oil that comes and there are currently no plans to build additional or more efficient refineries. • The legislation of the past administrations have also placed strains on the processing industry as further requirements increase the cost of refining. This also put s an enormous strain on supply and the result is higher oil prices. • Natural disasters such as hurricanes may also cause an increase in prices especially since a large portion of the refineries are located in the Gulf Coast region. The effect of these trends will likely increase current pricing and future pricing. Another hurricane with the power of Katrina will likely cripple our fuel supply. And given the current weather trends that is a very likely occurrence.

Not surprisingly, there are financial analysts who have predicted oil prices to go beyond the $100 per barrel milestone in the near future. Because of the pressure of these high prices and changes in drilling technology, many drillers are exploring more areas within the United States to drill for oil and gas.

A Self-Directed IRA provides the investor with the ability to invest in direct participation or in whatever position is most important to the investor. A Self-Directed IRA with checkbook control provides even greater control and ability to move upon opportunities when they arise. Of course, the gain is tax-deferred just as it would be if stock or a mutual fund were purchased.

Every day at 22.00 hrs. Zambra La Rocío offers a “zambra”, a form of flamenco show which is danced in caves of the Sacromonte, the gypsy district, (where some people still live!). Gipsies of the same family dance, sing and play a visceral flamenco which roots date back to the times of the moorish wedding dances in Granada. An additional atraction is the gorgeous view from the caves: the Alhambra and the Generalife by night.

The ZAMBRA LA ROCÍO is a flamenco cave in the Sacromonte Granada. Here you will see the very best Flamenco performances. The Rocio specialises in family Zambra which means that almost all the dancers and musicians come from the same family. The members of the family start to learn flamenco from the moment they can walk or possibly even earlier. Juan Marote, one of the youngest members of the troupe, had his first television performance at the tender age of only five.

One of the advantages of the Rocio is that the musicians sit at the mouth of the cave and the dancers move up and down in front of the audience, so everyone has a front row seat and a close up view of what is going on.

The Rocio has been visited by more famous names than it is possible to mention. For example, Bill Clinton and his family came last year accompanied by the Spanish king and queen.

The photo on the right is a bit blurred but it is obvious that President Clinton was amused when he visited.

Many of the hotels offer a package which includes picking you up from your hotel in a minibus, a guided tour of the Albayzín and Sacromonte, a free drink and a flamenco performance.

Government. Spain is a parliamentary monarchy with a bicameral legislature. The current king, Juan Carlos I (the grandson of Alfonso XIII, who was displaced by the Second Republic) is the first monarch to reign following the Franco period. His succession (rather than that of his father, Juan de Borbón) was determined by Franco: Juan Carlos ascended to the throne in 1975 following Franco’s death. In 1978 the constitution that would govern Spain in its new era took effect. While organizing a parliamentary democracy, it also holds the king inviolable at the pinnacle of Spain’s distribution of powers. In 1981 the king helped to maintain the constitution in force in the face of an attempted right-wing coup; this promoted the continuance of orderly governance under the constitution despite other kinds of disruptions—separatist terrorism in the Basque and Catalan areas and a variety of political scandals involving government corruption. Spain has repeatedly seen orderly elections and changes of government and ruling party. The head of state, the prime minister, is a member of the majority party in a multiparty system. The years under the constitutional regime have brought Spain into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Community—and therefore, politically and economically closer to Europe—as well as into ever wider circles of global involvement.

The major change that has come about in Spain’s political organization under the modern constitution is the creation of seventeen “autonomous regions” into which the fifty provinces are distributed. Each of the autonomous regions has its own regional government, budget, and ministries; these replicate those at the national level. Some provinces are now separated from or grouped differently from their groupings in the historical kingdoms of traditional reference and so regional identities are in many cases being newly forged. This process has its only parallel in modern times in the original formation of the provinces themselves in 1833.

Leadership and Political Officials. Leadership is a personal achievement but can be aided by family connections. In Spain’s multiparty system, shifts in party governance tend to bring about changes in officialdom at deeper levels in official entities and agencies than occur in the United States; that is, party membership is a correlate of government employment at deeper levels and in a greater number of spheres in Spain than in the United States. Spain’s political culture in the post-Franco period, however, is still developing.

The most local representative of national government is the secretario local, or civil recorder, in each municipality. Municipalities might cover one or more villages, depending on local geography, and there is a recent trend toward consolidation. Every locality as well has its municipal head of government, its alcalde (mayor), or—where a village has become a dependency of a larger seat in the municipality—an alcalde pedáneo (dependent mayor). Alcaldes are local residents who are elected locally while the secretarios are government appointees who have undergone training and passed civil service examinations. The secretario is the local recorder of property transactions and keeper of the population rolls that feed the nation’s decennial census.

Social Problems and Control. Spain’s justice system serves citizens from local levels, with justices of the peace and district courts, through the level of the nation’s Supreme Court (and a separate Supreme Court for constitutional interpretations). The system is governed by civil and criminal law codes.

Every Spanish locality is served by one or another police force. Urban areas have municipal police forces, while rural areas and small pueblos are covered by the Guardia Civil, or Civil Guard. The Civil Guard, which is a national police corps, also handles the policing of highway and other transit systems and deals with national security, smuggling and customs, national boundary security, and terrorism.

Informal social controls are powerful forces in Spanish communities of all sizes. In tightly clustered villages, residents are always under their neighbors’ observation, and potential criticism is a strong deterrent against culturally defined misconduct and the failure to adhere to expected standards. Many village communities rarely if ever activate the official systems of justice and law enforcement; gossip and censure within the community, and surveillance of all by all, are often sufficient. This is true even in urban neighborhoods (though not in entire large towns and cities) because Spaniards are socialized to observe and comment upon one another and to establish neighborly consciousness and relationships wherever they live. The anonymity of an American high-rise community, for example, is relatively foreign to Spain. But it is also true that larger Spanish populations resort to their police forces frequently and, today, are additionally plagued by the increased street crime and burglary that characterize modern times in much of the world.

Military Activity. Spain’s armed forces—trained for land, sea, and air—are today engaged primarily in peacetime duties and internationally in such peacekeeping forces as those of the United Nations and in NATO actions.

Spain entered the twentieth century having lost its colonies in the New World and the Pacific in the Spanish-American War or, as it is known in Spain, the War of 1898. Troubles in Morocco and deep unrest at home engaged the military from 1909 into the 1920s. Spain did not enter World War I. The Civil War raged from 1936 to 1939. Exhausted and depleted, Spain did not enter World War II, although its Blue Division (División Azul) joined Hitler’s campaign in Russia. The remainder of the twentieth century has seen years of recovery, rebuilding, the maintenance by Franco of a strong military presence at home, and—after his death—of the increasing internationalization of Spain’s involvements and cooperation, military and otherwise, with the rest of western Europe.

Military officers have enjoyed high social status in Spain and, indeed, are usually drawn from the higher social classes, while the countryside and lower classes give their men to service when drafted. In many places, men who reach draft age together form recognized social groups in their hometowns. At the end of the twentieth century, although young men are still subject to the draft, military service is open to women as well, and the armed forces are becoming increasingly voluntary. Spain’s final draft lottery was held in the year 2000.
SOCIAL WELFARE AND CHANGE PROGRAMS

Most of Spain’s programs of social welfare, service, and development are in the hands of the state—including agencies of the regional governments—and of the Roman Catholic Church. Church and state are separate today, but Catholicism is the religion of the great majority. The Church itself—and Catholic agencies—have a weighty presence in organizing social welfare and in sponsoring hospitals, schools, and aid projects of all sorts. Local, national, and international secular agencies are active as well, but none covers the spectrum of activities covered by the Church and the religious orders. The state offers social security, extensive health care, and disability benefits to most Spaniards. Actual ministration to the sick and disadvantaged, however, often falls to Church agencies or institutions staffed by religious personnel.
NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER ASSOCIATIONS

The importance of the Catholic Church in the spectrum of nongovernmental associations is great, both at parish levels and above. A hallmark of Spanish social organization in purely secular as well as in religious matters, however, is the formation of small groups on the basis of shared locality and/or other interests—sometimes in a guildlike manner—to pool resources, extend mutual aid, complete large tasks, or simply to share sociability. When based on shared locality, these groups are found from small villages to neighborhoods of large cities; nonlocal groups are based on common occupations or other shared experiences and interests. They offer intimacy beyond the family and join individuals within or between neighborhoods and localities. The spectrum of secular groups of this kind is extended—but by no means dominated—by such religious groups as saints’ confraternities, other kinds of brotherhoods, and voluntary church-based associations dedicated to a variety of social as well as devotional ends. In addition, large-scale regional, national, and international organizations have an increasing importance in Spanish society in the field of nongovernmental associations, an area that was once more completely dominated by Church-related organizations.
