Spanish is the language of 400 million people approximately! It may not have the universal appeal that English language has, but you cannot underestimate Spanish language at all. It is the second or third most-spoken language of the world!

Spanish is an Indo-European language originated in Spain and eventually became the main language of the Kingdom of Castile. Spanish spread into America, Asia Pacific and Africa between the 15th and 19th centuries with the expansion of the Spanish empire to those regions.

Spanish language and literature is quite rich and developed; you will find stories, short-stories, prose, drama and lyrics with the touch of romanticism and realism in Spanish language. Among all the elements of Spanish literature, arts and culture, music holds the center-role. Spanish music is appreciated all over the world. People of different countries listen to Spanish songs despite the language barrier. Rock in Spanish, called as Rock en Espanol in Spanish, has a huge audience across the globe.

Latin America is all about rhythm and Latin Rock is a blend of Latin American instrumental beats. Percussion, drum kit, piano etc. are the common instruments used in Latin rock.

Latin rock musicians have been showing a clear inclination to fuse cultural and linguistic culture divisions from the time it was originated. And the tradition is still going on.

Carlos Santana is said to be the father of Latin rock. Carlos created the style by the end of 1960s. However, the style underwent some changes in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Here the new style was introduced by the musicians of the time – Aterciopelados and Jaguares are two of them.

Chicano rock is a popular variant of Spanish rock. Mexican Americans are very much fond of Chicano rock. This style is mostly performed by Mexican Americans. However, there are Chicano rock singers and groups that do not even sing in Spanish language. Yet, it is considered a variant of Rock en Espanol.

Spanish rock and roll bears resemblance with the traditional rock and roll music and the culture of the land where Spanish language was originated like Cumbia, Ranchera, Rumba, Tango etc. Perhaps the rebellious approach and the use of Spanish instruments make Spanish rock and roll so popular.

Rock music of countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Philippines, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela are said to be the siblings of Spanish rock. The influence of Latin music, style, instruments and culture is prominent in them.

Enrique Bunbury, Luz Casal, Deluxe, Cristina Llanos and Amaia Montero are some of the Spanish rock singers and musicians whom people love to listen to. And they will carry the Rock in Spanish or Rock en Espanol to the next generation with all its beats, notes, tunes and rhythm intact.

Spanish music is known for its vibrancy and passion; from Flamenco dancing to Spanish guitar, its music is famous. With so many luxury hotels in Spain to choose from, you could combine a holiday of pampering and luxury, with traditional Spanish music and dance your nights away.

Flamenco

Why not centre a tailor made holiday in Spain around flamenco dancing? You could bring out your inner passion as your swing your hips in a local night club, returning to your luxury Spain hotel exhausted but invigorated. It would certainly be a different experience.

Flamenco music dates back to late 18th century. It is thought to have originated in Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Triana. It is made up of three essential elements: the dance (baile), the guitar (guitarra) and the song (cante). Flamenco needs to be appreciated from all three angles, and a tailor made holiday in Spain will allow you to do just that.

Folk Music Across Spain

Depending on which region you choose for your luxury Spain holiday, a range of folk music traditions can be heard. Traditional folk music is still alive in Spain today, and you could well experience its rich history and rhythmic sounds while on a tailor made Spain holiday.

In western Andalusia gaita rociera (a kind of 3-hole pipe) is a commonly used instrument in the traditional folk music of the region. And if your tailor made Spain holiday takes you to Malaga, violin and plucked-strings will more likely be the instruments you’ll hear when listening to traditional bands.

While popular across Spain, Jota is a musical form which could have originated in the Southern part of Aragon. If your tailor made Spain holiday should take you to this region, you will likely hear music performed on castanet, guitar, tambourines, bandurria and flute. Jota is a rich musical form, and is inspirational to listen to. With strong percussive sounds, the music has a distinctly North African feel. Coupled with a stay in a luxury Spain hotel, you could have an excellent holiday in this destination.

Spanish Popular Music

One of the primary historical landmarks for Spanish pop music was the Benidorm International Song Festival, founded in 1959 in Benidorm. This was a platform for international performers to play to a Spanish audience, and the festival’s success led to the creation of similar festivals across Spain. It would be a great musical addition to a tailor made Spain holiday if you timed your trip with one of the festivals. These festivals were the breeding ground for many up-and-coming Spanish musicians, allowing them to find their performing feet on home ground. One such iconic Spanish singer who has gained international acclaim is Julio Iglesias.

It was in the 1980s that the Spanish music industry really took off on the international market. This decade saw the cultural reawakening of La Movida Madrilena, which is still evident in Spanish music today. Contemporary Spanish popular music spans across international genres such as rock, ska, reggae blues and hip-hop, and a tailor made Spain holiday could well include enjoying the country’s musical entertainment.

cultures of South and Central America and the Caribbean islands blend American Indian, African and European (particularly Spanish and Portuguese) traditions. In folk music, the particular combination of elements varies from region to region, from the purely Indian forms of highland Bolivia and Amazon rain forests peoples to the mestizo (‘mixed’) music of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, the largely Hispanic music of Argentina, and the distinctive style of Brazil, which blends African and Portuguese forms. Minorities such as the East Indians of Trinidad and Guyana, the Javanese of Surinam and the Japanese of Brazil complete this rich musical scenario.

Less Iberian heritage has in general been preserved in Latin America than British in North America; many areas are devoid of Latin influence. But some Hispanic poetic forms dating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance (for example the romance) are performed in a variety of forms throughout the continent, such as the copla of Colombia, the Andean countries and Argentina. Other folksongs, such as the Argentinian and Chilean Tonadas and Tonos, also preserve old Spanish literary forms. In contrast to the thriving Anglo-American tune repertory of the USA, however, few extant Iberian melodies are current in Latin America except the Hispanic children’s repertory, which is similar in its Old and New World settings. In the Andean region of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, indigenous Indian music has absorbed Spanish elements, a process that began under the influence of 16th-century Christian missionaries. Andean tunes are essentially European, but often have much repetition and use tetratonic and pentatonic scales. This blend stands in contrast with the marked lack of acculturation between Anglo and Indian style in North America.

Music has played an important part recently in Latin America’s politics, the nueva canción movement being a prime example. Latin music is very diverse, with the only truly unifying thread being the use of Latin-derived languages, predominately the Spanish language, the Portuguese language in Brazil, and to a lesser extent, Latin-derived creole languages such as those found in Haiti.

Although Spain and Portugal are not part of Latin America, Spanish music and Portuguese music are strongly cross-influenced with Latin music.

Latino music now become famous in the world you can see Jennifer Lopez, a Popular Latin American singer or Shakira, a famous Colombian Latin pop singer and dancer, both of them now introduce modern Latin music and many people like their song. Other singers are Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony. They have the best seller album in this period. Latin music with modern style is more interested than older one. It’s all because people and audiences like listening to music which has different style and several music instruments.

Now, you can read and download freebies of Latin music on musiclatino.com, one of latin music website review. It features daily updated free Latino music videos, photos, news, and everything about Spanish and Latin music. If Latin music is going to be more developed, it’s possible that Latin music in a few next years will get higher rating than now.

You can find all information about latin music in http://www.musiclatino.com/ find latino tracks at http://musiclatino.com/?page_id=34 and latino album in http://musiclatino.com/?page_id=33

Flamenco dancing is an expressive form of dance, which has its roots in Andalucia, Spain and more specifically, according to some experts, in Jerez de la Frontera. It originated among Indian gypsies who had arrived and settled in Spain after travelling around Europe in the early part of the 15th century, to later be joined by others who came from North Africa.

The gypsies brought with them their own language, Romano, and an oriental style of music never before heard on the Spanish mainland. As the centuries passed, the cultures of the local population of Jews and later the Moors all had an influence on the gypsy music with elements from their musical styles being incorporated.

From their arrival in Spain, the gypsies were classified as outcasts of society and special laws were made specifically for them. Forced to live in camps as they were not allowed to own any property, many took up work in local mines or in the fields of the region leaving those with any sort of skill to make a slightly better living in work such as blacksmiths and jewellers.

The people were treated badly and the flamenco song (the cante) was initially performed at family gatherings as a way to express feelings of depression and misery. During the early years, flamenco is thought to have been entirely a vocal art form, which was accompanied by the rhythmic clapping of hands.

King Carlos III changed the fortunes of the gypsies in the 18th century when he removed their specific laws and gave them the same rights as other Spanish citizens; however, this did not remove the stigma of mistrust that the Spanish people had of them. Due to their newfound freedom, the gypsies were able to improve their financial status and some of the previously out of reach items such as musical instruments became within their means, hence the arrival of the guitar (el toque) and its addition to the cante.

As the flamenco style of music became more popular near the end of the last century, performers began to appear at parties of the richer members of society with professionals staging the music and dance, the most popular of which were the fandangos, at ‘cafes cantantes’.

The ‘opera flamenca’ period followed as the flamenco gained in popularity and began to appear in theatre stage shows. These, however, tended to focus more on the melodic style of music – cante bonito – which did not express the passion as much as the early gypsy styles.

As the Second World War progressed through Europe there was little prospect of performances on stage, but during the 1950s festivals in Andalucian towns such as Malaga, Jerez and Cordoba rekindled public interest producing a new generation of performers.

The motions and facial expressions of the female flamenco dancers can be compared to those of Oriental dancers with the only exception being that they are more forceful. Each style of dance uses a handheld musical instrument – the flamenco dancer, castanets and the oriental dancer, finger cymbals – however; the cymbals used in flamenco are not traditional and have only been in use for the last 100 years or so.

The centuries have seen flamenco progress from sombre home songs expressing feelings of hardship to popular stage shows throughout the world that continues to be developed.

Spanish music has become increasingly popular due to the hit-makers of pop superstars Shakira and J-Lo. Did you know that there are many different types of Spanish music? Every Spanish-speaking country has its own version of what Spanish music is, and it differs greatly from culture to culture.

Salsa is a type of Spanish music that is featured prominently in Cuban and Puerto Rican communities. Salsa is a fast moving style of dance that is popular in all of the clubs these days. It is popular because the dance moves do not require a lot of space, so more people can be squeezed in to enjoy this music on a dance floor. Salsa music is a combination of African rhythms with Spanish beats.

Tango music and dance is known for its dramatic flair. You probably already have a picture in your head of a woman dancing with a rose held in her teeth! The music is fairly classical featuring violins, double bass and a piano, but it can also have the accompaniment of flutes and clarinets.

Spanish pop music is a meld of many regions that is produced to appeal to the masses. Pop music is usually more about the singers than the songs themselves.

Latin jazz does not have a backbeat which makes it sound completely different from American jazz music. The rhythm is straight and not like the swing sound found in American jazz. Latin jazz combines African rhythms with conga drums giving it a Caribbean flavor

Bossa nova music originated in the country of Brazil. Unlike other types of Spanish music, bossa nova does not use percussion instruments. Instead, bossa nova is infused with guitar and piano instruments to give it a gentle rhythm.

Tejano music is often characterized as a Spanish polka, if you can imagine that sort of comparison. Tejano music roots are from Mexico and traditionally feature an accordion, but synthesizers have been used more recently to update this classic style of Spanish music.

Bull fighting is very closely associated with Spain and can trace its origins back to 711 A.D. This is when the first bullfight took place in celebration for the crowning of King Alfonso VIII. It is very popular in Spain with several thousand Spaniards flocking to their local bull-ring each week. It is said that the total number of people watching bullfights in Spain reaches one million every year.

Bullfighting was originally a sport for the aristocracy and took place on horseback. King Felipe V took exception to the sport however and banned the aristocracy from taking part, believing it to be a bad example to the public. After the ban commoners accepted the sport as their own and, since they could not afford horses, developed the practice of dodging the bulls on foot, unarmed. This transformation occurred around 1724.

So what happens during a bullfight?:
Firstly the bull is let into the ring. Then, the top bullfighter called the Matador, watches his chief assistant wave a bright yellow and magenta cape in front of the bull to make it charge. He watches this in order to determine the bull’s qualities and mood, before taking over himself.

Then a trumpet is sounded and several fighters called Picadores weaken the bull by placing spears into it. This takes around 10 minutes.

Another trumpet is sounded and the Matador now removes his black winged hat and dedicates the death of the bull to the president or the crowd before beginning his faena.

The faena which is the most beautiful and skillful section of the fight and where the matador must prove his courage and artistry. The faena consists of a running at the Matador carrying a muleta. This is a piece of thick crimson cloth draped over a short stick, which can be held in either the left hand or draped over the espada, the killing sword, which is always held in the right hand. Usually the muleta, in left or right hand, is first held in front of the matador to make the bull charge and is then swung across and away from the matador’s body hopefully taking the bull with it.

This is a show, basically a dance with death – one wrong move and the Matador could become impaled on the horns of the bull. It is the Matador’s job to make this dance dramatic and enjoyable for the audience.

The faena continues until the Matador has demonstrated his superiority over the bull. Once this is achieved the bull is ready to be killed.

The matador stands some ten feet from the bull, keeping the bull fixated on the muleta and aims the espada between the shoulder blades. The matador attacks pushing the espada over the horns and deep between the shoulder blades. If the sword goes in to the hilt it is an estocada but if it hits bone it is a pinchazo or media-estocada. An estocada usually results in the bull dropping immediately to its knees and dying, but if the bull fails to die the matador may take the descabello (a sword with a short cross piece at the end) which he stabs into the bull’s neck severing the spinal cord. The fight is over.

The matador may be awarded trophies by the president, according to his skill in working with the bull, which can be one or two ears from the bull, the tail and the hoof. The crowd will often encourage the president to award the trophies by waving white hankerchiefs, and this waving continues after the trophies have been awarded in an attempt to get the matador to throw his trophies into the crowd. The crowd in return hurls flowers which are collected by the matador’s assistants.

Flamenco is a folk art, around 200 years old. It is from Southern Spain and is individualistic, yet structured. Song, dance and guitar are blended into passionate rhythms which are often improvised and spontaneous. Flamenco will have any imaginable theme, from up to date stories, to politics, to love, to history, to humor, etc. Often however, the tragic lyrics and tone of flamenco reflect the sufferings of the gypsy people from whom it originated Flamenco exists in three forms: Cante, the song, Baile, the dance, and Guitarra, guitar playing. The source of Flamenco, however, lies in the tradition of singing. The singers’ role is very important with the guitar playing an accompaniment to the song. Today the solo guitar flamenco has developed into a separate art and is fashionably blended with jazz, blues and pop music. Flamenco dance has complex patterns of rhythm and sophisticated footwork with the upper body emphasising grace and posture. The songs of flamenco are from different regions as: Fandangos from Huelva; and Alegrias from Cadiz. There are two main styles in Flamenco: “jondo” – the serious and deep meaning, the cry of oppressed people; and “chico” happy, light and often humorous. The ideal in flamenco is called “duende” (demon or elf), which is a state of emotional involvement, group communication at a deep level and a feeling of sympathy, between musicians, dancers and listeners.
